My very first unfavorable run-in with immigration took place back in 97’, during the second year of my travels. Being young, reckless and inventive, I was knowingly bending the rules, in an effort to spread a three months visa over the course of an entire year. Sooner or later, however, as I’ve learned over the years, odds are that you’ll get caught.
That first encounter did, however, end favorably for me, being released once again into the captivity of my choice, following a mere few hours detention at the border. Nevertheless, and with all due respect to immigration authorities, of which I’ve got none whatsoever, the unbearable lightness with which one’s passage could be denied; with which basic human liberty to be anywhere we want to be; to walk whatever part of this earth we choose, is so brutally tromped on still seems a mind boggling absurdity to me.
One would think that, being somewhat older, more experienced and conscientious; I would have learned to play by the rules. Nevertheless, time has obviously not taught me to see the sense in borders and limitations, and if being more conscientious contributed to anything, it’s rather to my objection to the senseless deprivation of basic human rights. Therefore, what I ended up gaining from experience is an increased efficiency with how to spot the gaps in the fences and make proper use of them.
Many might strongly object to that point of view, mildly disagree or merely feel uncomfortable with it, and I don’t blame them. These borders and this system of border control were established for a reason and continue to play an important part in maintaining a certain status quo many of us cherish.
Nevertheless, can anyone tell the precise point from which something that might have once been beneficial starts doing more harm than good? Can anyone sincerely say what is universally ‘good’ to begin with? Border control was established in order to protect us from ourselves, yet can very easily be manipulated for purposes that are far from beneficial for us, whoever we are.
Alongside the malignant and irresponsible side to human nature resides a benevolent and responsible one just as well. However, as long as we cherish control; favor authority over freedom, we shall never enable that noble savage within to maturate into predominating our nature! As long as we allow ourselves to be treated as infants, we shall never grow up!! As long as we elect to be in chains, we shall never be free!!!
